Everyone needs fresh air and water. Food and clothing are
also essential. Shelter is also a must. We cannot survive without these basics
needs. We depend on nature for food. Food is to be produced and water resources
are to be tapped. Our country (India) is a vast one. In 1940’s the population
was 300 million. But today it is more than 900 million.
Health and hygiene have improved the longevity of people.
Baby boom is growing. But idleness is also increasing. As a result some remain
as parasites. Some continue to work hard. The idlers are non-producers, but
they are consumers. Our needs are increasing by leaps and bounds. The majority
of idlers create a number of problems.
Population pressure is also called demographic pressure. It
produces problems. Growing problems are evils. These problems create scarcities
of different nature. There is food scarcity. There is a scarcity of housing.
Above all there is social restlessness. There is a problems of strikes and
bandhs. There is a problem of rivalry between one class and the other. Social
injustice breeds all problems.
Illiteracy, especially among women is the cause of over
population. People must be educated. Castes and communalism can be rooted out
with education. People must realise the importance of small families. Family
planning is family welfare. We must be scientific in our approach to planning
our families.
The government should not resort to coercive methods in
controlling the population. Family planning should become people’s movement.
Unwanted births give rise to sundry problems. Family planning is a
self-discipline. It is the lasting remedy to population explosion.
