DOWRY SYSTEM
The institution of family is sacred. It is the bed rock of
our civilization. It ensures peace and progress. It contributes to sustained
growth. It is the life-line of relationships. It is the fountain of all
culture. Marriage sanctifies conjugal relations. It makes a new beginning in
our lives. It joins two hearts for fruitful living. It is the beginning of
family life.
Material wealth is only a means. We make efforts to earn. Our
desire to earn should not make us slaves to material possessions. Our craze for
material wealth blinds us to lofty values. Respect for each other and love for
all are some values.
When we forget that money is only a means, then money
(material wealth) acquires a special power. It is evil. Dowry is an evil
because much importance is given to material benefits. It eclipses our hearts –
the founts of divine love. Today marriages are made on the basis of cold
commercial calculations. Hence the bride burnings and dowry deaths.
That’s why our government made dowry – offering or receiving
a legal (culpable) offence. We are in a democratic set up. A number of rules
and laws govern us. It is the rule of law. We make laws and break them. What is
the remedy? Self-discipline is the panacea. It is meaningless without
spontaneous love and concern.
Television and radio are powerful tools. They have to create
new awareness. They can tune the youth to higher goals. Traditional practices
must be scientific. They have to foster social unity communal amity. They have
to lay a sound foundation to the institution of marriage. Then only the evil of
dowry disappears.
