India got independence in 1947. It is political freedom. We
opted for democratic polity. Democracy is enlightened self-rule. Every citizen
has a vital stake. Democracy is responsibility. India lives mostly in villages.
Illiteracy is rampant in villages. It hampers progress. It hinders our growth
and keeps us backwards. It also makes us lethargic. But literacy makes us
skilled and efficient. It makes our farmers and workers more productive.
Literacy contributes to resourcefulness.
About sixty five percent of our people are illiterates. Illiteracy creates backwardness. So National Adult Education Policy was launched on October 2, 1978 adult education centres were opened throughout our country. Every village has a centre. These centres enrol illiterate adults. Every centre maintains a record. Evening classes are held. The government appoints the teachers.
These centres aim at silent revolutions. Adults learn in a
responsible manner. Learning skills improve their competence. Farmers adopt better
farming methods. They know how to increase their incomes. Green revolution and
white revolution (more milk) are a result of the literacy of adults, especially
in our countryside. Adult education also contributes to our cultural unity.
Voluntary organisations have a vital role in this sphere.
Volunteers are dedicated social workers. They inspire the illiterate adults
with their spirit of service. They explain the uses of learning. They serve as
catalysts. They propagate various governmental schemes. They draw the attention
of the villagers to a number of issues.
Adult education checks population explosion. It liberates
society from prejudices. It brings about national integration. Workers in farms
and factories improve their skills. Adult literacy sustains secularism. It
promotes communal harmony. Illiteracy begets all evils. Adult literacy
generates peace and prosperity. It ensures sustained progress.
