WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE(1564-1616)

A great author is neither a scribbler nor a pen mam. He is the eye of the humanity. An author is born and bred in the society. It is the society which moulds him into an author. It is the society with all its traditions which influences him. A great author mirrors the past, voices the present and moulds the future.

William Shakespeare was a great poet and playwright. He was not a highly educated one. He studied in a grammar school. He was not a scholar in classical languages. Even then his understanding of human nature is quite unique. He wrote a number of sonnets and plays. His presentation of every character endears him to all generations.

Shakespeare was a versatile genius. His sonnets reveal his rare poetic vision of life. Poetry is brevity and intensity tempered with beauty. His plays deals with the infinite variety of human nature. The ever changing contours of human conduct are related to series of situations. There is connection between human nature and changing events and incidents.

Shakespeare’s characterisation reveals his deeper understanding of human nature. Every tragedy and comedy revealed the freshness of human nature. Shakespeare depicts what is enduring and abiding in human nature. For instance in “King Lear” Shakespeare has depicted the eternal conflict between good and evil.

Shakespeare wrote most of his plays in bank verse. Every word is appropriate to the context and character. Every character acts in its own manner as we do. Readers feel oneness with every character. The characters of Shakespeare are swayed by the same passions and prejudices as we governed. Every play is filled with a number of quotable quotes.
