MAHATMA GANDHI

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on Oct. 2, 1869 at Porbandar, in Gujarat. His parents were very pious and honest. Young Gandhi was greatly influenced by his mother. He was greatly impressed by legendary Satya Harischandra and Shravana. He vowed to tread the path of truth.

In 1888 Gandhi went to London to study law. He joined England’s Vegetarian Society. He worked hard and became a Barrister in 1891. For some time he practised law in Rajkot and later went to South Africa. He observed the plight of Indians there. He was deeply moved and fought against social injustice. He condemned racial discrimination. He detested religious bigotry. He liked the whites but opposed their inhuman policies. But he was never bitter. He opposed injustice but never hated anyone. He served in Natal and Johannesburg. Tolstoy Farm became the cradle of his social service. He devised Satyagraha.

Gandhi returned to India in 1915. He was moved by the abject poverty if his countrymen. He accepted Gopalakrishna Gokhale as his political mentor. He started Sabarmati Ashram. He promoted the spirit of self-reliance. He was against untouchability. He condemned ostentation. Satyagraha and Non-corporation were his tools in his fight against the British. Satyagraha is not just hunger strike. It is dedication to a greater cause. It is resisting evil with love. He fought for Kheda and Champaran farmers.

Gandhi stood for social unity and communal harmony. He gave utmost importance to social equality. It is realised through mutual respect and selfless service. Service without love is selfishness. Selfishness is the womb of all misery. Political independence is only a means for economic well-being. Poverty and economic backwardness make our freedom senseless.

Gandhi stood for communal harmony. He was spiritually scientific in his outlook on life. He practised what he preached. He led our freedom struggle with the strength of his personality. He was a puritan in simplicity and Spartan in discipline. Selfless service was his life breath. He stood for universal brotherhood. Gandhism is enlightened humanism. It is lasting love in action. It is the science of our public service. It is of the essence of humanity’s lofty practices. So, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is called the MAHATMA.
